I initially encountered phase field methods in the context of fracture mechanics, but over time I realized that the framework was much broader than I had imagined. That realization changed how I viewed interfaces, evolving geometries, and multi-physics coupling problems.

The diffuse interface philosophy provided a unified mathematical framework for fracture, topology optimization, microstructure evolution, and coupled physical systems. It also aligned naturally with my interest in adaptive and scalable computational algorithms.
